Jefferson County Public Schools Assessment Information

  • Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) will assess any child, ages 3 to 21 years, if he or she is suspected of having a disability.
  • If a child is preschool-age and not enrolled in a JCPS program and the parent/guardian suspects that he or she may have a disability, the Placement Office may be contacted for information.
  • If a child is enrolled in a Jefferson County public school and the parent/guardian suspects that he or she has a disability, the parent/guardian may contact either the school counselor or the child’s teacher to discuss concerns and a possible referral for assessment.
  • If a child is not enrolled in a Jefferson County public school and the parent/guardian suspects that he or she has a disability, the parent/guardian may contact the ECE Placement to discuss concerns and a possible referral for assessment.
  • Upon receipt of the completed written referral, the parent/guardian will be invited to attend an Admissions and Release Committee (ARC) meeting to discuss the identified concerns. At that meeting, the parent/guardian may be asked to grant consent for assessment in the areas of concern.
  • Once an assessment is completed, the parent/guardian will be invited to attend another ARC meeting to discuss the assessment results.
  • The ARC will consider all current and valid assessments when determining disability eligibility, including assessments completed by other agencies.
  • If a child is identified as having a disability that adversely affects his or her educational performance, the ARC may develop an individual Education Program (IEP) in order to determine specific goals and objectives/benchmarks to target within the educational program.
